I'm a Gentrifier — Now What?! Join Baldwin House on March 23rd!
Join Baldwin House Community Collective and Resource Generation DC on March 23rd for an outdoor community dinner, political education workshop, and fundraiser
It’s been a while, Baldwin House Family! We have several exciting updates coming right on time, as Springtime and cherry blossoms roll in with force. We’re having a packed Saturday, March 23rd, and would love to you soon!
On Saturday, March 23rd, at 5:30 PM, Baldwin House Community Collective and Resource Generation DC are co-hosting Baldwin House’s first in-person fundraising event since we purchased our building!
Resource Generation is a multiracial community of young people (18-35) with wealth and/or class privilege who are committed to the equitable distribution of wealth, land, and power. Our event is called “I'm a gentrifier… now what??” and will be an evening of political education and fundraising, centered around gentrification. We'll move from awareness to action and mobilizing our privilege to create affordable housing and community control in DC. There will be a lively dinner followed by a presentation and activities. If you support Baldwin House and identify with having privilege in DC, come by to meet a few of our organizers and tenant-stewards, and start using your privilege to create real opportunities and systems of support for DC residents. Sign up at tinyurl.com/RGBaldwinHouse.
In other exciting news, if you are interested in getting more involved and building a deeper relationship with us, the Baldwin House Coop has begun hosting bi-weekly Community Gardening Days every other Saturday from 10am-12am. Now that the sun is peeking back out, it’s time to start building our communal garden. Future tenant-steward, Boe Luther, is leading the project with his years of experience in urban gardening, applied research, and community healing. Also on March 23rd, (the morning of our fundraiser with Resource Generation!) we will begin planting seedlings through Boe’s ingenious practice of using milkcrates to house individual growing pods. We will spend time getting to know each other and our neighbors, and continuing to co-create how Baldwin House’s community space will function.
Email tenant-steward, Abi Shakur, at abishakur427@gmail.com if you want to join us at our Community Gardening Days or learn how to get more plugged in!
Baldwin House renovations are still proceeding steadily thanks to our partners at YouthBuild DC. Every weekday, students are learning trade skills by working on the rehabilitation of our six single-bedroom units. We are so grateful to partner with an organization that is dedicated to developing the youth in our city as Baldwin House plans to do the same in our own way. Renovations should be completed by June of this year! If you want to help us in the meantime, you can still donate to our Debt-Free Futures campaign at GiveButter.com/debt-free-futures . Your contribution would go a long way to making Baldwin House a permanent reality.
We hope to see you soon, family! Thank you so much for your support.
In Solidarity,
